How to Celebrate Earth Day

Earth Day 2017 happens to fall on a weekend this year making it the perfect opportunity to journey out into nature. As we mark our calendars with Earth Day, I wanted to share small steps that can all help us to improve. One of my goals this month is to see if my office building in Chelsea can offer recycling. There is always SO much plastic and paper being thrown out. Many of us order food delivery and with a La Colombe coffee shop below, you can just imagine the amount of paper cups and plastic tops being thrown out. As I work on that, here are some ideas to help remind us to cherish our beautiful Mother Earth and celebrate it's beauty this coming weekend!

  • RECYCLE. This seems easy enough, but most office spaces and homes do not offer recycling. Find out where your local recycling is or see if you can speak to a building manager in your office space.
  • Purchase items made with recycled materials such as clothing, yoga mats and paper.
  • Reduce your plastic use. Have plenty of take-out forks? Ask the restaurant to leave that material out when placing a delivery order. You will end up with less junk very easily.
  • Purchase glass bottles over plastic. Worried about glass breaking? Silicone covers are available for protection. Stainless steel bottles are another great option, like the lovely Swell water bottles.
  • Invest in a filter system for your home to cut down on plastic bottle purchases and put those reusable bottles to good use.
  • Use glass tupperware over plastic. Plastic breaks down with each dishwasher use. And because everything just taste better in glass.
  • Similar to a idea to a reusable water bottle, purchase your own travel coffee mug. I think most coffee shops give a discount when used. More cash overall!
  • Use a washable mop and cleaning cloths. You can toss into the washer afterward and save your need for paper towels or (nasty) Lysol wipes.
  • Use wash cloths instead of loofahs. Those can harvest large amounts of bacteria. Use bar soap while you are at it!
  • Plant a garden, or at least one plant that you can use. Aloe Vera plant would be a good addition for your skin care.
  • Buy local and seasonal. Visit your local farmer's market to see what is available.
  • Buy only what you need, everything else will end up in a landfill. Minimalist lifestyle at its best!
  • Buy your own bags to take to the grocery store. Bonus points if you actually remember you take them with you.
  • Turn off the water while brushing your teeth and shorten your shower. An even better idea, shower with your partner.
  • Use the stairs instead of the elevator.
  • Ride your bike or walk more when you can.
  • Carpool or use public transportation. Subway in NYC during summer is very warm, and very gross. Personally I do not like to sweat right after my shower so I walk my ass to work on a daily basis!
  • Use energy efficient light bulbs.
  • Remember to turn off lights that are not being used. How would you like it if someone turned you on and left?
  • If possible, let nature do the work and dry your clothes outside.
  • Dry clean only items? If this is a tough habit to break in general, bring the plastic wrap and wire hangers back to the dry cleaners.
  • Pay bills online and opt for the paperless statements.

Happy Earth Day 2017, go outside and do something good for yourself. I will definitely be heading out to Central Park rain or shine! For some internet browsing, below are a few websites to check out for having chic and stylish items.
